What Is the UK Unmarried Partner Visa?

The UK Unmarried Partner visa is the immigration route for those who are in a genuine, committed, and durable relationship with a British citizen or settled person but who are not married or in a civil partnership. It falls under Appendix FM and offers the same pathway to settlement as the Spouse visa, provided all requirements are met. Unlike the Spouse visa, it requires the couple to demonstrate that they have been living together for at least two years before applying.

The Two-Year Cohabitation Requirement

The couple must have been living together in the same household continuously for at least two years immediately before the date of application. Evidence of two years of cohabitation typically includes joint tenancy or mortgage agreements, joint utility bills, joint bank account statements, correspondence addressed to both partners at the same address, and any other documentation confirming shared residence over the relevant period. Gaps in cohabitation can be problematic and must be addressed carefully in the evidence.

Other Requirements

  • Financial requirement — sponsor must demonstrate income of at least £29,000 per year gross for new applications
  • English language requirement — CEFR Level A1 for the initial application
  • Suitable and non-overcrowded accommodation available
  • Relationship is genuine, subsisting, and exclusive
  • Intention to live together permanently in the UK

What Evidence Is Needed?

A comprehensive, well-organised bundle of evidence is essential — covering the length of the relationship, the history of cohabitation, and the genuine nature of the commitment. Useful evidence includes joint tenancy or mortgage documentation, utility bills and bank statements at a shared address, joint bank account statements, photographs together at various points in the relationship, communication records, letters or statements from friends and family, and evidence of shared travel or holidays.

Unmarried Partner Visa vs Fiancé Visa

The Fiancé visa is for couples engaged to be married who intend to marry within six months of arrival in the UK. It is a temporary visa and does not itself lead to settlement — the holder must marry and then apply to switch to a Spouse visa. The Unmarried Partner visa, by contrast, is a route to settlement in its own right and does not require the couple to marry.

UK Unmarried Partner Visa FAQ

What counts as evidence of cohabitation?
Joint tenancy agreements, utility bills, bank statements at a shared address, council tax bills, correspondence, and other documents showing both names at the same address over the qualifying period.
Must we live together for exactly two years?
Two continuous years of cohabitation immediately before the application date is a firm requirement. Gaps can be problematic and must be addressed carefully in the evidence bundle.
Is this the same as a Spouse visa?
The pathway to settlement is the same. The key differences are the cohabitation requirement (rather than marriage) and the type of evidence needed.
Do we need to get married to stay in the UK long-term?
No. The Unmarried Partner visa is a route to ILR and British citizenship in its own right. Marriage is not required.
What if we have only lived together abroad?
Cohabitation abroad can count towards the two-year requirement, provided it is evidenced clearly. We advise on how to evidence a period of cohabitation that took place outside the UK.
What is the minimum income required?
£29,000 gross per year for new applications from 11 April 2024. Savings of at least £62,500 held for six months can substitute where income is insufficient.
Can I work on an Unmarried Partner visa?
Yes. The Unmarried Partner visa grants the right to work in the UK without restriction on occupation or hours.
What if our relationship is long-distance?
The two-year cohabitation requirement means that a long-distance relationship without periods of continuous shared residence will not qualify. The Fiancé or Spouse visa route may be more appropriate.

The Two-Year Cohabitation Requirement

You must have been living together continuously for at least two years immediately before the application date. Evidence includes joint tenancy agreements, utility bills, bank statements, and other documentation showing shared residence at the same address.

What Evidence Is Needed?

Joint tenancy or mortgage documentation, utility bills and bank statements at a shared address, photographs, communication records, letters from friends and family, and evidence of shared travel. The bundle should tell a clear, chronological story of your relationship and cohabitation.

Other Requirements

Sponsor income of at least £29,000/year, English language at CEFR Level A1, suitable accommodation, and a genuine intention to live together permanently in the UK.

Route to ILR and Citizenship

The same five-year pathway as the Spouse visa — initial grant of approximately two years nine months, then a two and a half year extension, then ILR. British citizenship available after a further 12 months.

Gaps in the two-year cohabitation period are one of the most common reasons for Unmarried Partner visa refusals. Even short gaps can cause problems if not properly explained and evidenced. We review your cohabitation history carefully before submission.
