What Is the UK Adult Dependent Relative Visa?
The Adult Dependent Relative (ADR) visa is one of the most restrictive family immigration routes available in the UK. It is designed for parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, sons, or daughters (who are adults) who require long-term personal care as a result of age, illness, or disability, and who cannot access the required level of care in their home country. Refusal rates are very high and expert legal advice before making an application is strongly recommended.
Who Is Eligible?
The ADR visa is available to adult relatives (aged 18 or over) of British citizens, persons settled in the UK (ILR or settled status under EUSS), or persons with refugee status or humanitarian protection.
What Are the Requirements?
- The applicant requires long-term personal care as a result of age, illness, or disability
- They are unable to perform everyday tasks without assistance
- The required level of care is not available or is unaffordable in their home country
- The UK-based sponsor is able and willing to financially support the applicant and meet their care needs
- There will be no recourse to public funds
What Evidence Is Required?
The evidential requirements are demanding. Applications require detailed medical evidence from qualified practitioners confirming the need for long-term care and the applicant's inability to perform everyday tasks without assistance. Evidence of the unavailability or unaffordability of care in the home country must also be provided — typically a survey of available care options and evidence of costs. Robust financial evidence from the UK sponsor is also required.
Why Is the ADR Visa So Difficult to Obtain?
The Home Office applies a high evidential threshold. Even where all documentation is in order, considerable discretion is exercised. The Home Office looks carefully at whether care is truly unavailable or unaffordable — not merely inconvenient or less desirable — in the home country. We have experience building the most compelling possible case and advise honestly on the realistic prospects of success before any application is submitted.
