What Is the UK Skilled Worker Visa?
The Skilled Worker visa is the primary route through which overseas nationals can come to the UK to work in a skilled role. It replaced the former Tier 2 (General) visa and is now the most widely used work visa category in the UK. The visa allows you to live and work in the UK for up to five years initially and can lead to settlement after five years of continuous residency.
Who Is Eligible?
To qualify you must have a valid job offer from a UK employer holding a Home Office-approved sponsor licence, a Certificate of Sponsorship accurately describing your role, a role at or above RQF Level 6 (graduate level) as of July 2025, a salary of at least £41,700 per year or the going rate for your occupation — whichever is higher — English language proficiency at CEFR Level B1 or above, and sufficient funds to support yourself in the UK.
How Has the Skilled Worker Visa Changed in 2025?
The UK government introduced significant reforms in July 2025. The minimum skill threshold was raised from RQF Level 3 to RQF Level 6, meaning only graduate-level roles are now eligible. The salary threshold was also increased from £38,700 to £41,700 per year. What Documents Do I Need?

- Proof of English language ability — an approved SELT result or degree taught in English
- Proof of meeting the salary requirements
- Tuberculosis test results if required for your country
- Criminal record certificate if requested
- Proof of funds if your sponsor has not certified maintenance
Can I Bring My Family?
Yes. Your partner (including an unmarried partner in a durable relationship) and children under 18 may apply to join you in the UK as dependants. Dependants can work in the UK without restriction, study at UK institutions, and access NHS healthcare by paying the Immigration Health Surcharge.
Does the Skilled Worker Visa Lead to Settlement?
Yes. After five years of continuous residence on the Skilled Worker route you may apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR). Following 12 months of ILR you may apply for British citizenship by naturalisation, subject to meeting all relevant requirements.
What Are the Application Fees?
As of 2025, fees for a Skilled Worker visa application from outside the UK are £769 for up to three years. Applicants are also required to pay the Immigration Health Surcharge. Fees are subject to change and should be verified at the time of your consultation.
