What Is Indefinite Leave to Remain?
Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) is a form of permanent residence status in the United Kingdom. It gives the holder the right to live, work, and study in the UK without any time restriction and without any conditions attached to their immigration leave. ILR is a significant milestone on the path to British citizenship and is the most secure form of lawful residence available to non-British nationals short of full citizenship.
Who Is Eligible to Apply for ILR After a Work Visa?
Most holders of long-term work visas — including the Skilled Worker visa, the Health and Care Worker visa, the Global Talent visa, and certain Global Business Mobility routes — become eligible to apply for ILR after five continuous years of lawful residence in the UK. Holders of the Global Talent visa under the Exceptional Talent endorsement may be eligible after just three years.
What Are the Requirements?
- Five years (or three years for Global Talent Exceptional Talent) of continuous lawful residence
- Not exceeding 180 days outside the UK in any rolling 12-month period
- Passing the Life in the UK Test
- Meeting the English language requirement — usually CEFR Level B1 or above
- No serious criminal convictions or adverse immigration history
- Satisfying any applicable salary or role requirements at the time of the ILR application
What Is the Life in the UK Test?
The Life in the UK Test is a computer-based test covering British history, culture, values, and institutions. It must be passed before making an ILR application (subject to age and other exemptions). Does ILR Lead to British Citizenship?
Yes. After holding ILR for 12 months, most applicants become eligible to apply for British citizenship by naturalisation — provided they meet the other requirements including the residence test, good character requirement, and English language proficiency. British citizenship confers the right to a British passport and full rights as a UK national.
